Advanced Professional Certificate in International Environmental Law and Climate Diplomacy

1. Program Overview:

An advanced and comprehensive professional program extending over 6 months (180 total training hours), aimed at preparing and qualifying experts, negotiators, and legal advisers in the fields of international environmental law, climate diplomacy, carbon markets, and sustainable development. The program integrates specialized legal knowledge, negotiation skills in Conferences of the Parties (COPs), and the formulation of environmental and climate compliance strategies for companies and institutions.

2. Program Objectives:

  •         Mastering the frameworks and rules of international environmental law: understanding the guiding principles of multilateral environmental agreements, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and the Paris Agreement on climate change.

  •         Professional competence in climate diplomacy and COP negotiations: acquiring international negotiation skills, understanding climate justice and loss and damage mechanisms, and preparing Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

  •         Mastering climate finance and carbon markets: understanding financing mechanisms and international climate funds, and trading in carbon markets in accordance with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

  •         Managing environmental responsibility and climate litigation: training participants in environmental disclosure and corporate governance (ESG) standards, environmental rights and litigation issues, and the just transition toward renewable energy and water and food security.

3. Target Audience:

  •         Negotiators and members of official national delegations to climate and environmental conferences.

  •         Legal advisers and sustainability and environmental compliance (ESG) officers in companies and public and private institutions.

  •         Personnel working in environmental protection and sustainable development organizations and relevant international organizations.

  •         Researchers and academics interested in climate policy, the green economy, and environmental law.

  •          IED101: Foundations of International Environmental Law (18 hours).

  •          IED102: International Climate Regime and the Paris Agreement (18 hours).

  •          IED103: Climate Finance and Carbon Markets (18 hours).

  •          IED104: Corporate Responsibility and Environmental Litigation (14 hours).

  •          IED105: Energy, Water, Food, and Climate Migration (14 hours).

  •          IED106: Negotiation, National Contributions, and Applied Project (14 hours).

6. Quick Organizational Data:

  •          Duration and training load: 6 months | 48 lectures (96 interactive direct hours) | 180 total training hours (including 36 hours of self-study + 30 hours of assignments and case studies + 18 hours for the project and final assessment).

  •         Delivery mode: interactive online (two lectures per week + applied workshops).

  •         Language of study: Arabic with the use of English terminology and references.

  •         Assessment system: participation and continuous assignments, case studies, negotiation simulation, final examination, and graduation project.

  •         Final project: preparation of a negotiation position paper for a developing country at a climate conference, or the design of an integrated climate and environmental compliance plan for an institution or company.
